TRENDY PORTUMNA is the top angling holiday base on the River Shannon. From April to October you can bet on there being a steady stream of anglers from across Europe arriving in the town, all of them expecting to catch great numbers of bream and roach, hybrids around 2lb, plenty of perch, maybe a few tench and certainly a good number of pike, if that’s what they want.

Lough Derg is the largest lake on the River Shannon system, stretching 25 miles from Portumna at its northern tip, to Killaloe at the southern end. Altogether it there is 32,000 acres of open and it is something of a contradiction in terms to describe it as being typical coarse fishing water!
